What is CRVS?

In this section, you will find definitions of the concepts of civil registration and vital statistics and an explanation of why and how they are inter-related as part of the civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system. We lay out the key vital events that are included in the CRVS system – births, deaths, marriages, divorces, adoptions and legitimations – and go on to explain why the official registration of such events is important for individuals, families and populations. We describe the legal, administrative and statistical advantages of a CRVS system from the perspective of the state, government, business and social–economic sectors.

The section covers the following topics:

  • Definition and purpose of civil registration
  • Definition and uses of vital statistics
  • Why CRVS systems matter for individuals, society and development
  • The strengths of vital statistics derived from CRVS systems
