Dissemination of vital statistics


Disseminating vital statistics includes the timely tion of an annual national vital statistics report on births and deaths, disaggregated by age, sex and sub-region. This data includes numbers, completeness (coverage) rates, with trends and patterns of leading causes of death, in a repository accessible to the different users.


Most governments publish the national vital statistics report periodically. Once microdata have been transformed, the aggregated information should be made widely available. Program planners and managers should be reminded that vital statistics are essential for their work, and attention should be drawn to ways of improving statistics in documentation and at meetings. In many countries, the National Statistics Office compiles and publishes annual vital statistics data, whereas more-detailed analyses are conducted by academics and researchers.

Data users include health service planners and managers in the and private sector, insurance groups, government policy makers, academics, demographers, epidemiologists and researchers, health advocates, the media and civil society organisations. Collaboration with the media should also be welcomed, especially in disseminating findings to the general

The use of information and communication technologies can greatly improve the dissemination of vital statistics. For example, data ‘dashboards’ can be used to visually present key data in summary form so that decisions can be made quickly. Dashboards provide an at-a-glance perspective on the current status of a project in the context of its predetermined metrics. The dashboards are also linked to a database, so that users can change key inputs to see how they affect the  displayed information. Users can also access the source data to understand the interrelationships shown. Additionally,  dashboards help manage the large amount of data collected by health programs by tracking key indicators and displaying trends, thereby allowing users to identify problems and target follow-up activities to improve services.
