How to certify and code COVID-19 deaths

COVID-19 is posing a challenge to health systems worldwide, as medical and public health professionals work to contain the virus in rapidly changing environments.

The University of Melbourne Data for Health initiative has produced a video to support physicians and data coders to accurately code and certify deaths caused by COVID-19.

“With consideration to the many and changing demands placed on health professionals in this unprecedented emergency, we’ve created a resource that is succinct, up-to-date and easy to apply,” said Professor Alan Lopez, Director of the University of Melbourne Data for Health initiative.

The timely and accurate recording of mortality data will greatly benefit both real-time responses to the pandemic and forward planning to better equip health systems for the future.
