These guidelines provide five steps for users of verbal autopsy (VA) to follow to help them interpret and present their data, and thus improve the utility of VA data for public health decision making. The five steps are: understand the VA population; estimate the completeness of VA death reporting; assess the plausibility of the age-sex distribution of deaths from VA; conduct a plausibility analysis on the cause-specific mortality fractions from VA; and present the main findings of your VA data for policy action.
